PRAYERS FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY

A collection of beautiful prayers for the Faithful Departed

Purgatory? What is it? Purgatory can defined as the suffering of the faithful which causes a "purging or cleansing" of temporal punishment due to sin. It can be explained as a process (not a place) of purification after death for those who are saved, so they may achieve the holiness necessary to enter heaven. It is explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1054) as: Those who die in God's grace and friendship imperfectly purified, although they are assured of their eternal salvation, undergo a purification after death, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of God. It is implied in Scripture (Revelation 6:9-11; 1 Peter 3:18-19), taught by the early fathers, and defined by the Church (especially the Council of Florence, 1439). Pope Paul VI (in his apostolic constitution Indelgenitarum Doctrina, 5) reminds us, "A perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory, and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things."

HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY:

My Jesus, by the sorrows You did suffer in Your agony in the Garden, in the scourging and crowning with thorns, on the way to Calvary, in Your crucifixion and death, have mercy upon the souls in Purgatory, especially those who are forgotten; deliver them from the unspeakable pains they suffer; call them and admit them to Your most sweet embrace in paradise.

Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, Eternal Rest...

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottom-less pit, deliver them from the lion's mouth, lest the infernal regions swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness; but let Your standard-bearer, St. Michael, bring them back into the holy light which You did promise of old to Abraham and his seed.

ETERNAL REST:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let the perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

O Lord hear my prayer, and let my cry come to You.

O God, the creator and redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Your departed servants the remission of all their sins that through our prayers they may obtain pardon which they have always desired.  (especially...). Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY:

O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them.

Be not severe in Your judgments, but let some drops of Your precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames.

And, Merciful Savior, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

PRAY FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY:

O God of all consolation, Savior of souls, have pity on those who suffer in purgatory and grant them them entire deliverance from their pains, and the happiness You did formerly promise to Your servant Abraham and his posterity. Be moved O Lord, by considering the fidelity which which they served You during their mortal life, and forget the failings which they committed through the frailty of our nature; deliver them from torments and darkness, and bring them to a place of peace and light.

Hear, O my god, my humble prayer, and grant this grace to the souls for whom I am particularly bound to pray. (especially...). I beseech You by the name and through the merits of Him who took upon Himself to satisfy for us all, and who lives and reigns with You forever and ever. Amen.

ST. GERTRUDE PRAYER:

St. Gertrude the Great is invoked for souls in purgatory and for living sinners. Our Lord told St. Gertrude that the following prayer would release 1000 souls from purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners as well.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Let us pray

O God, Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Your departed servants the remission of all their sins, that through our pious supplications they may obtain the pardon which they have always desired. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O God, the Giver of pardon and the Lover of the salvation of men, we beg Your clemency on behalf of our brethren, kinsfolk and the benefactors who have departed this life, that by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the saints, You would receive them into the joys of Your everlasting kingdom. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O God, to You it belongs always to have mercy and to spare, be favorably propitious to the souls of Your servants and grant them the remission of all their sins, that being delivered from the bonds of this mortal life, they may be admitted to life everlasting. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

OUR FAMILY

Good Jesus, Your loving Heart was ever moved by the sorrows of others. Look with pity on the souls of my dear ones in purgatory. Hear my cry for mercy, and grant that those whom You called from our home and hearts may soon enjoy everlasting rest in the home of Your love in Heaven.
