THE MYSTERY OF THE BLESSED TRINITY

"Who or What is the Blessed Trinity?"

The Mystery of the Blessed Trinity constitutes the central doctrine of the Catholic Church. A Christian's entire life is marked "in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." All life begins in the Trinity and is destined to end in the Trinity.

God has been pleased to reveal this Mystery to us: "In his goodness and wisdom, God chose to reveal himself and to make known to us the hidden purpose of his Will by which through Christ, the Word made flesh, we have access to the Father in the Holy Spirit and come to share in the Divine Nature" (Vaticum II: Constitution on Divine Revelation, no. 2).

There are three distinct Persons in one God, and they exist only in relation to one another. They are coequal, coeternal, and cosubstantial. The Son proceeds from the Father by generation, and the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son by spiration.

God the Father is the Creator, God the Son is the Redeemer, and God the Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier, but not in such a way that the Son and the Holy Spirit are excluded from creation, or the Father and the Holy Spirit from redemption, or the Father and the Son from sanctification.

All of us want to know about God. But it is more important for us to know God, the way two beloved know one another, as the result of an intimate person-to-person relationship. The prayers shown are intended to help us attain such a knowledge of the three Persons of the Trinity.
